Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need to see a psychologist?

Coming to therapy is a personal choice. There are many reasons why people seek therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing psychological issues, or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times, it is in response to unexpected life changes such as a divorce or loss of a loved one. Many seek the advice of a psychologist as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth.

Working with a therapist can help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges. Therapy can help address many types of issues including depression, anxiety, conflict, grief, stress management, body-image issues, and general life transitions. Therapy is right for anyone who is interested in getting the most out of their life by taking responsibility, creating greater self-awareness and working towards change in their lives.

Is therapy confidential?

As Registered Psychologists, we adhere to the standards of practice set out by the College of Alberta Psychologists. Included is a strict adherence to confidentiality. Although there are some circumstances in which confidentiality is limited, these exceptions will be thoroughly explained and discussed during our first session.

How long is a therapy session?

A typical therapy session is 50 minutes, leaving 10 minutes at the end for the psychologist to engage in note taking and reflection.

How long will therapy take?

The length of therapy depends on a number of factors and can only really be determined on a case-by-case basis. Most clients start to see some positive changes within the first 4-6 sessions, and feel that therapy is complete somewhere between 6-18 sessions. In cases where there has been a long-standing concern, it is possible to continue with more sessions if we determine together that this is feasible and will contribute to continued improvement.
