Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessments
For School-Aged Children
At Edgar Psychological, we provide comprehensive Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments for school-aged children. These assessments are designed to help families gain a deeper understanding of their child’s strengths, challenges, and developmental needs.
A thorough evaluation can help guide educational planning, access to supports, and appropriate interventions. At this time, ASD assessments are offered for school-aged children only.
What the Assessment Process Looks Like
The assessment process includes several components that allow us to gather information from multiple sources, including parents, teachers, and direct observation of your child.
The process begins with an initial meeting with parents or caregivers (approximately 50 minutes). During this conversation, we discuss your child’s developmental history, current concerns, and school functioning, and determine whether an ASD assessment is appropriate.
If recent intellectual testing has not been completed, IQ testing will be included to better understand your child’s cognitive profile.
If concerns about attention or ADHD are also present, computerized attention testing may be conducted as part of the evaluation. This portion of the assessment typically takes 60–120 minutes.
Your child will also participate in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), a widely used standardized assessment that evaluates communication, social interaction, and behaviours associated with autism. This observation typically takes 60–90 minutes.
Parents or caregivers also take part in a detailed diagnostic interview without the child present (approximately 90–120 minutes). This interview explores your child’s early development, social communication patterns, behaviour, interests, and everyday functioning.
In some cases, additional assessment tools may be used depending on your child’s needs. These might include academic testing or other standardized measures and generally take 60–120 minutes.
Parents and teachers will also be asked to complete behavioural rating scales and adaptive functioning questionnaires. These forms provide valuable insight into how your child functions across different environments such as home and school.
Once all of the information has been reviewed and integrated, parents attend a feedback meeting (approximately 50 minutes). During this session we discuss the results of the assessment, review whether diagnostic criteria are met, and go over recommendations for home, school, and additional supports.
A comprehensive written report summarizing the findings and recommendations is provided following the assessment.
